There are two major players in the fast food hamburger industry and the main thing I think that sets them apart is their cooking methods. I always reckon the flame grilled burger tastes better. There is something about flame grilling that really adds some extra flavor. So whenever I get that choice between the two I always select the flame grilled version. So to enjoy that flame grilled flavor at home we need to get ourselves a charcoal cooking grill.

Now that summer is getting closer we will be thinking about more outdoor living. There is nothing better on a warm balmy evening than to sit outside with friends and family an enjoy a home cooked charcoal grilled meal. In some places where it is always summer, the lifestyle revolves around the outdoor BBQ area. What could be better than to sit high up on an outdoor deck feeling the cool breezes and enjoying the view with our BBQ meal. It is a way of life in many parts of Australia and traditionally you see Dad with the BBQ apron on cooking over the charcoal grill although gas is popular here and does not quite render the same flavor as the charcoal. While there is a certain flavor in the naked flame cooking when that flame comes from charcoal you can really taste the difference.

If you check in the storeroom of a commercial kitchen you find will a bottle of artificial wood fire flavoring for meals. I was quite amused to see that but it only goes to show that the naked flame cooking has a unique flavor all of it's own. So what can you cook on your charcoal cooking grill. The basic answer there is anything you want. It can be anything from steaks to sausages or chicken or fish or kebabs. The list goes on and you are only limited by your imagination. You could make your own burgers with beef mince but many find it easier to just throw on stuff that is all pre-prepared. Much easier to just open a packet of steaks or something and throw them on the grill. They will be done in a matter of minutes while sausages need a bit longer. You can grill fish just as you like it and a favorite in Australia is prawns on the BBQ.

Why cook outside any way. Because you need to be outside in the cool of the evening. The air is fresh and good for you. The meal is unique and always different depending on how many beers Dad has had before he starts cooking. It makes life much easier for Mum because all she needs do is perhaps a salad and some fresh bread buns. The BBQ is Dad's domain and he takes great pride in it and does all the cleaning of it after wards. A get together round the BBQ is a great social event and you should always have a BBQ pack of meat in the freezer for a BBQ at a moments notice. If you are not into the BBQ scene you are missing out.
